Deconstructing the Ladder Network Architecture

چکیده
The manual labeling of data is and will remain a costly endeavor. For this reason, semi-supervised learning remains a topic of practical importance. The recently proposed Ladder Network is one such approach that has proven to be very successful. In addition to the supervised objective, the Ladder Network also adds an unsupervised objective corresponding to the reconstruction costs of a stack of denoising autoencoders. Although the empirical results are impressive, the Ladder Network has many components intertwined, whose contributions are not obvious in such a complex architecture. In order to help elucidate and disentangle the different ingredients in the Ladder Network recipe, this paper presents an extensive experimental investigation of variants of the Ladder Network in which we replace or remove individual components to gain more insight into their relative importance. We find that all of the components are necessary for achieving optimal performance, but they do not contribute equally. For semi-supervised tasks, we conclude that the most important contribution is made by the lateral connection, followed by the application of noise, and finally the choice of what we refer to as the ‘combinator function’ in the decoder path. We also find that as the number of labeled training examples increases, the lateral connections and reconstruction criterion become less important, with most of the improvement in generalization being due to the injection of noise in each layer. Furthermore, we present a new type of combinator function that outperforms the original design in both fullyand semi-supervised tasks, reducing record test error rates on Permutation-Invariant MNIST to 0.57% for the supervised setting, and to 0.97% and 1.0% for semisupervised settings with 1000 and 100 labeled examples respectively.

The present research studied the electronic transport of an ideal infinite ladder nanostructure in the presence/absence of network defects by using Green’s function method at the tight-binding approximation. The network defects can be simulated by considering a finite ladder which is connected via two contacts to two similar infinite ladders. The results showed that the hopping energy of rungs...

Abstract : The variation of the electrical resistivity of a material in the externalmagnetic field is known as magneto resistance. This phenomenon has been attractedboth theoretical and experimental researchers in miniaturization of magneto meters inthe recent years. In this paper, the magneto resistance of an inhomogeneous twodimensional conductor with ladder geometry i...
متن کاملProgressive Ladder Networks for Semi-Supervised Transfer Learning
Semi-supervised learning has achieved remarkable success in the past few years at harnessing the power of unlabeled data and tackling domains where few labeled data examples exist. We test the hypothesis that deep semisupervised architectures learn general representations. We combine two well-known techniques for semi-supervised and transfer learning, ladder networks and progressive neural netw...
متن کاملA Semisupervised Approach for Language Identification based on Ladder Networks
In this study we address the problem of training a neuralnetwork for language identification using both labeled and unlabeled speech samples in the form of i-vectors. We propose a neural network architecture that can also handle out-of-set languages. We utilize a modified version of the recently proposed Ladder Network semisupervised training procedure that optimizes the reconstruction costs of...
متن کاملEctodomain Architecture Affects Sequence and Functional Evolution of Vertebrate Toll-like Receptors
Toll-like receptors (TLRs) are crucial components of innate immunity that specifically recognize diverse pathogen-associated molecular patterns from pathogens. The continuous hydrogen-bond network (asparagine ladder) formed among the asparagine residues on the concave surfaces of neighboring leucine-rich repeat modules assists in stabilizing the overall shape of TLR ectodomains responsible for ...
